MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four men were charged with murder Monday in the shooting of Memphis defensive lineman Taylor Bradford on campus during an attempted robbery, authorities said.
Police said there were rumors around campus Bradford, 21, had won thousands at a casino in Tunica County, Mississippi, the night before police found him Sept. 30 in his car, which had crashed into a tree a few blocks from his campus apartment. Investigators said Bradford had about $7,400 in his pocket when he was found.
Larry Godwin, Memphis police director, said the attackers intended to rob Bradford, but didn't get what they had come for.
"He was targeted because there was some information that was out there and they believed he had some cash," Godwin said.
Police announced the arrests of three Memphis men who are not students at the university at a news conference in the afternoon. The men were identified as DaeShawn Tate, 21; Victor Trezevant, 21; and Courtney Washington, 22. All three were in police custody.
On Monday night, The Commercial Appeal of Memphis reported, prosecutors approved murder charges against Memphis student Devin Jefferson, 21, who is accused of plotting the robbery that led to Bradford's death.
