Ryan Benzel, an assistant pro at Seattle Golf Club, won the final three holes to earn an unlikely halve and push the United States to a 13 ½-12 ½ victory over Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup Matches at The Oconee Course in Greensboro, Ga. In the Ryder Cup-style team matches, Benzel tied with Paul Wesselingh in singles and his half-point was what was needed to push the Americans to victory and a 15-5-3 series record. Benzel finished the weekend with a 1-0-3 record.

"Benzel's match is what you think about years after this event," said U.S. Captain Roger Warren of Kiawah Island, S.C.

• Juniors Morgan O'Friel and Lillian Bourret scored for Eastern Washington (3-3-0), which defeated Utah State 2-1.

• Washington State (5-1-1) rebounded from its first loss of the season to post a 1-0 nonconference victory over Nevada (1-5-1) at the UNLV Rebel Classic.

MEN'S SOCCER

• Senior forward Kevin Forrest's goal in the 96th minute lifted No. 22 Washington to a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 23 Furman in the Husky Fever Classic at Husky Soccer Field. The win improved UW's record to 5-2-1, and Furman (7-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season.

Earlier Sunday, Portland defeated Denver, 2-1, but Denver was crowned tournament champion based on goal differential. On Friday, the Pioneers defeated the Huskies 4-1, and Furman defeated Portland 2-0.
