State Colleges Report | Ex-Husky Redd joins coaches at Pacific Lutheran

TACOMA — For Jamie Redd, timing is everything. So when NCAA Division III member Pacific Lutheran hired women's basketball coach Kelly Warnke, and she in turn posted an opening for an assistant coach, Redd applied.

Warnke hired Redd, who said she is looking forward to translating her college and professional experiences to student-athletes who have a passion for the game.

"It's a great opportunity for me being that it's not too far from where I live," said Redd, who set scoring records at the University of Washington before playing for the Seattle Storm. "Obviously, the program has had some success, but they're moving in a new direction and I wanted to be a part of that."

Warnke said, "I am very excited for Jamie to join the coaching staff at PLU. She has experienced success as a student and player, and her passion for the game will add to our program's success at PLU. She is eager to work with our student-athletes and will do a great job preparing our guards for the upcoming season."

Redd graduated from Washington in 1999 and left as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,027 points.

At the time, she was only the seventh player in Pac-10 Conference history to amass at least 2,000 career points.

Redd led the Huskies in scoring all four years and was named All-Pac-10 three times.

Off the hardwood, Redd was a Scholar-Athlete of the Year at UW, an award recognizing Redd for her contributions in the classroom and on the court.

Redd played three seasons with the WNBA Storm. She also played professionally for one year in Greece and one year in Israel.

In addition to coaching at Pacific Lutheran, Redd will continue to work as a corrections officer for the Washington State Department of Corrections. She also is athletic director for a nonprofit organization called Game Time, which provides camps, clinics and motivational speaking for schools and youth organizations.

"When I retired in 2004 the only thing I had known was basketball," Redd said. "I woke up and went to sleep, and it was all basketball. I wanted to see what the real world is like, working 9 to 5, to get some real-life experience.

"I was burned out from sports, period. I thought, let's see if this is something I can live without. But the whole time I've worked with the Department of Corrections I realized that I really miss basketball. I found out that's what I really enjoy."

It's all a matter of timing.

Seattle Pacific

Men's soccer: The Falcons' (4-0-3) seven-game unbeaten run to begin the season has come despite scoring only nine goals. Five of the next six games are at home, beginning Thursday against undefeated MSU Billings.

Women's soccer: Sophomore midfielder Janae Godoy (West Valley of Yakima) has scored four goals in the last four games, including three game-winners. Sophomore forward Jocelyn Charette (Curtis of University Place), a 21-goal scorer at Tampa, has been cleared following her transfer.

Volleyball: Senior outside hitter Alyssa Given (Salinas, Calif.) has five matches with five or more aces, including seven in a five-set win last week. She already owns the SPU career record and, with 40, is on pace to smash the season mark of 59.

Seattle U.

Women's soccer: After posting their fourth consecutive shutout Sunday, the Redhawks have held opponents scoreless for the last 377 minutes, 48 seconds. Seattle moved up from 19th to 16th in this week's NSCAA coaches poll.

Volleyball: Senior outside hitter Nikole Thompson (Marysville-Pilchuck) tied Seattle's single match record for kills when she notched 29 kills in last Thursday's match against Western Oregon, already the fifth single-match record either tied or broken by a Redhawk this season.

Washington

Volleyball: Freshman outside hitter Becky Perry (Austin, Texas) ranks in the top 10 of three statistical categories in the Pac-10: fourth in kills per game (4.38), fifth in hitting percentage (.429) and fifth in points per game (5.12).

Cross-country: Heralded freshmen Marie Lawrence (Reno, Nev.) and Max O'Donoghue-McDonald (Seattle Prep) each set the bar high for their budding Huskies careers, as both ran third for the women and men, respectively, at the season-opening Sundodger Invitational on Saturday. Lawrence's time of 20:58 was four seconds faster than the best UW time at the same event one year ago.

Washington St.

Cross-country: Siblings Chris Williams and Becky Williams (Decatur of Federal Way) are competing together for the first time this fall.

Volleyball: WSU takes on Oregon State on Friday in Corvallis, and the match will be broadcast on tape-delay by FSN at 1 p.m. Sunday. Six of WSU's 13 players are from the Northwest and seven of OSU's 17 players have Northwest hometowns.

Western Washington

Women's soccer: Western's 5-2 start is the school's best since 1986.

Men's soccer: Freshman forward Gibson Bardsley (Mount Si) has four goals this season, one short of matching the most for a Western freshman since 1986.

Football: Sophomore running back Craig Garner (Lakes of Tacoma) has had five 100-yard rushing efforts in the Vikings' last six games.

Other colleges

Central Washington: Junior middle blocker Rachel Schurman (Mead of Spokane) has been selected as GNAC co-Player of the Week for volleyball.

Eastern Washington: The Eagles football team (2-0) climbed into the national rankings this week, coming in 25th in The Sports Network NCAA Football Championships Subdivision top 25 poll.

Northwest: Women's soccer coach Erin Redwine (Issaquah) played for the Seattle Sounders of the W-League in the Professional Development League of the United States Soccer League this summer and played in the national semifinal game in Rochester, N.Y., in August.

Saint Martin's: Junior John Riak (North Thurston of Lacey) took first in the Sundodger Invitational men's 8K open event to earn his second win in as many meets on Saturday. He finished with a time of 24:35, 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Whitman: With three goals and one assist in six games, senior forward Kristen Berndt (Mount Si) is on pace to lead the women's soccer team in scoring for a fourth consecutive season.

Whitworth: The men's and women's cross-country teams both placed second at the Willamette Grass Course race Saturday in Salem, Ore., with freshman Nick Gallagher (Bedford, Iowa) and sophomore Jo E. Mayer (East Valley of Spokane) each finishing third in their respective races.
