Seattle University will add baseball, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's tennis during the next two years. The expansion will increase the number of intercollegiate varsity sports offered by SU to 19.
Coaches for golf and tennis will be hired in January; the teams are to begin play for the fall 2008 season.
The university will hire a baseball coach in July 2008, giving that coach a full year to assemble a squad to begin varsity competition in the 2009-10 academic year.
"We are thrilled to be returning the sports of baseball, golf and tennis to Seattle U. Intercollegiate Athletics," athletic director Bill Hogan said. "Anyone who knows SU athletics will recognize that we have had many outstanding alumni from these sports in years past. The additional sports will also support our goal for NCAA Division I league membership."
All five sports were previously offered by the school, which dropped its Division I status in 1980. Seattle U. currently competes at the Division II level, but in May, university trustees voted unanimously to return to Division I athletics as an independent.
Seattle U. is making the move without the security of a conference affiliation. SU hoped to return to the West Coast Conference, which it was a part of from 1971 to 1980, but the conference announced in March it would not be expanding anytime soon.
