Teams from Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Haverstraw, N.Y., are 3-0 in pool play after action Wednesday at the Junior Softball World Series at Everest Park in Kirkland.

There are 10 teams in the tournament, split into two pools, and the championship game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday and is scheduled to be televised on ESPNU.

In action Wednesday, the host team from Redmond lost 12-11 to Grand Junction, Colo. Emily Millet had two hits in the defeat.

Pilot Mountain was a 2-0 winner over Manuabo, Puerto Rico. Haley Shelton pitched a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts.

Haverstraw posted an 8-0 victory over Bacolod, Philippines. Krysten Benson had 13 strikeouts for the winners and added two hits, including a triple.

In the other game Wednesday, Westchester, Calif., edged Boardman, Ohio, 16-15.

SOCCER

• After winning five consecutive Northwest Conference titles, Puget Sound was again chosen to win the title in a poll of league coaches. The Loggers have been ranked as high as 14th in the nation in preseason polls.

BASKETBALL

• Seattle University announced the signing of Denmark's Anne Deleuran Kristensen, a 5-foot-8 point guard. Kristensen, a 20-year-old native of Aarhus, Denmark, has played for the Aabyholj Greens club team for the past four years.

Two years ago, when the team moved back into Denmark's top division, she averaged 12.5 points. Last season she averaged 11.7 points.

• The Explosion of the International Basketball League has scheduled a news conference today at 3 p.m. in Monroe to announce the team is moving its home games to East Snohomish County after spending last season playing in Everett.

GOLF

Mark O'Meara, who won the Masters and British Open in 1998, and Craig Stadler, who won the 1982 Masters, have entered the Boeing Classic Aug. 24-26 at the TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge. O'Meara is a rookie on the Champions Tour this season.

• Medalist Erik Hanson, a former Mariners pitcher, won two matches in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association's Master-40 Championship at Moses Lake Country Club. Hanson, who plays out of Sahalee Country Club, held on against Michael Coombs of Snohomish. Hanson didn't have a bogey through the first 16 holes and was 2-up. At that point, though, he had two bogeys and Coombs pushed the match to the 19th hole, which Hanson won with a 20-foot birdie.

Paul Mitzel of Mercer Island pulled off an upset in the PNGA Junior Boys' Championship by upsetting the medalist at Burley (Idaho) Municipal Golf Course. Mitzel beat William Holdridge of Blaine, 1-up.
