College Basketball Notebook | Pelphrey accepts job at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — John Pelphrey was introduced as Arkansas' coach Monday — and he said he will still be the Razorbacks' new coach when he goes to sleep tonight.

"I'm not going anywhere," Pelphrey said. "But I have heard the first day is the toughest."

Pelphrey, 38, arrived a week after Dana Altman took the Arkansas job. Altman backed out the next day and returned to Creighton, citing family issues.

Pelphrey coached at South Alabama the past five seasons, where he had an 80-67 record. He went 44-19 in the last two seasons.

Arkansas was without a coach after Stan Heath was fired March 26.

to coach Texas A&M

Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon is expected to be introduced today as Texas A&M's coach, according to a person close to the program who requested anonymity because the hiring hadn't been announced.

Billy Gillispie left the Aggies for Kentucky last week.

Turgeon, 42, is 128-90 at Wichita State since 1999.

Wooden hospitalized

LOS ANGELES — Retired UCLA coach John Wooden, 96, was hospitalized Sunday but the Hall of Famer is entertaining visits from ex-players and doing well, according to his daughter, Nan Muehlhausen.

Muehlhausen said Wooden's doctors suspect he is suffering a reaction to arthritis medication and that the solution might be as simple as changing dosage.

Report: Durant to exit

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas freshman Kevin Durant, who swept the six major national player-of-the-year awards, has decided to make himself eligible for the NBA draft, two sources close to the program told The Dallas Morning News.

Notes

• California junior center DeVon Hardin and Kansas sophomore forward Julian Wright declared themselves eligible for the NBA draft.

Hardin, recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot, hasn't signed with an agent, leaving open the possibility of a return to Cal.

Meanwhile, Wright said he plans to hire an agent.

• Former Bradley assistant Lennox Forrester, 38, is the new coach at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

• St. Bonaventure scheduled a news conference for today to announce a coach, expected to be Robert Morris' Mark Schmidt, 44.
