NW Briefs | Western's men win own meet in cross country

Western Washington dominated in repeating as the men's champion and Simon Fraser won the women's title at the 33rd Viking Invitational cross-country meet Saturday in Bellingham.

The Vikings men, ranked 16th nationally, won by 40 points over runner-up Seattle Pacific, 32 to 72. It was Western's 10th win at the meet and its fifth in seven years. Central Washington was third (83), Seattle U. sixth (151) and Evergreen State last (175).

Simon Fraser's women, ranked No. 1 in NAIA, outlasted defending champion Seattle Pacific, 36 to 50. Western Washington was fifth (128), Central Washington sixth (142) and Seattle U. last (199).

Simon Fraser's David Wambui outkicked Saint Martin's John Riak to take the men's individual title, completing the 10-kilometer course in 32 minutes, 10 seconds. Western's Anthony Tomsich was sixth in 32:40 and Logan Senrud was ninth in 32:55. Sam Scotchmer of Central Washington was seventh in 32:41.

For SPU, Bjorn Bostrom was 14th (33:20), Brian Cronrath took 24th (34:11) and James Rosser was 26th (34:13). Rounding out the Falcons' scorers were Chad Meis in 31st (34:22) and Doug Gibson in 37th (34:36).

Completing the WWU's top six were Keever Henry in 12th (33:13), Bul Nyuop in 15th (33:34), Keith Lemay in 17th (33:33) and Sam Brancheau in 19th (33:46).

For Seattle U., Nicholas Alvarado was 33rd in 34:31.

Club Northwest's Rose Wetzel, who competed at Georgetown, won the women's title, touring the 6K course in 22:07. Mary Moriarty of Seattle Pacific was seventh in 22:36, and teammates Karin Rohde and Jane Larson were 10th (23:03) and 11th (23:06).

Also scoring for SPU were Suzie Strickler in 16th place (23:11) and Kate Harline 20th (23:26).

For the fifth straight week, Ashley McDougall led the Western women, placing 27th with a 23:46 clocking.

For Seattle U., Charisse Arce was 51st in 25:14.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships are Oct. 21 at Saint Martin's.

PLU hosts meet

Harrison Wilson of Linfield and Julie Lauterbach of Whitworth set course records in winning the 30th Pacific Lutheran Invitational in Tacoma.

Wilson completed the 8K course in 25:14. Western Oregon and Whitworth both finished with 46 points, with Whitworth taking home the trophy based on the finish of its sixth and seventh runners. Linfield rounded out the top three teams, finishing with 58 points. Saint Martin's was fourth, Puget Sound sixth and PLU last.

For Saint Martin's, Niwar Nasim was 17th (26:30) and Josh Gatbunton 19th (26:33).

Puget Sound's Andrew Bonica was 18th (26:32) and Cam Nakano 20th (26:36).

Kenneth Chilcoat led the Lutes, placing 22nd in 26:42. John Pedack was 51st in 27:37.

On the women's side, Lauterbach covered the 6K course in 21:58 in leading Whitworth to the team title with 53 points. Western Oregon and Lewis & Clark College rounded out the top three. Saint Martin's was fifth, PLU sixth and Puget Sound last.

For Saint Martin's, Jessie Dunnam was eighth (23:04), Amy Layton 21st (23:36) and Helen Camden 28th (23:53).

Lauren McDonald was the first finisher for PLU, placing 15th in 23:23. Lexie Miller was 19th (23:30) and Michelle Hegg 26th (23:50).

Puget Sound's top finisher was Lauren Mouate in 30th (23:54).

Northwest runner wins meet

Beth Knudtson of Northwest University won the NAIA Region I preview cross-country meet in La Grande, Ore.

Knudtson covered the 5K course in 19:13. Other top Northwest finishers were Kierstein Bailey in fifth (20:04), Katie Campbell in 12th (20:52) and Alisha Baldwin in 13th (20:52).

Host Eastern Oregon won the team title with 53 points. Northwest was third with 63.
