NW Briefs: Rowing titles up for grabs on Green Lake

The 127th running of the USRowing Masters National Championship Regatta continued on Saturday with finals at Green Lake Park.

Bill Byrd and Tiff Wood of the Willamette Rowing Club dominated the men's E double sculls final, winning the national title in 3 minutes, 37:10 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Byrd and Wood joined Willamette teammates Craig Johnson, Rod O'Hearn and coxswain Jann Byrd to win gold in the men's E four with coxswain in 3:30:30.

The battle for second was close, with Occoquan International (3:35:02) narrowly pulling ahead of Pocock Rowing Center (3:35:81).

In the women's D eight, Lake Union Crew (3:35:52) defeated Marin Rowing Association to win the title. Lake Washington Rowing Club's Josh Proctor and Evan Jacobs led from start to finish in the men's A pair and won gold with a time of 3:29:71.

Pattie Pinkerton and Cathy Kemper of San Diego Rowing Club narrowly defeated Judy Ogliore and Cathy Curran of Pocock Rowing Center to win gold in the women's E double sculls. San Diego clocked a 4:10:50 to Pocock's 4:11:08.

Mountain biking

Seattle's Jill Kintner won her second title in as many races this season at the 2006 Mountain Biking World Professional Championships in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Kintner has proven nearly unstoppable so far this year, with four out of five World Cup wins, a BMX Australian National Championship and an Australian Mountain Bike National Championship. After receiving a bye in the first round, she took down Corona, Calif.'s Tara Llanes in the semifinals and Anneke Beerten of the Netherlands in the finals.

"The day went great, and I was fortunate to have the most energy at the end based on the bye I received in the first round," Kintner said. "I'm happy with where I stand heading into the final race of the season."
