NW Briefs: Islanders row into U-23 finals

HAZEWINKEL, Belgium — Mercer Island's Jesse Johnson and Bainbridge Island's Nate Rooks helped the United States qualify for Sunday's finals of the 2006 World Rowing Under-23 Championships with a second-place repechage finish in the men's eights.

Heather Johnson of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center finished second to advance to today's semifinals of the lightweight women's single sculls.

Note

• The All Nations Cup 2006 continues today and Sunday with games and cultural events at Tukwila's Starfire Sports Complex. Fifty adult matches will be played, including women's regional and masters division games. All-day tickets are $5. Children 12 and under are free.
