Men's Basketball Notes: Duke's Redick honored

Duke's J.J. Redick won the Naismith Trophy for men's college player of the year, and Villanova's Jay Wright was named the nation's top coach, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Sunday in Indianapolis.

Redick was also named The Associated Press player of the year Friday after finishing second in the nation in scoring (27.4 points per game), helping Duke go 32-4 and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles.

He finished his career as the NCAA's top three-point shooter (457) and is second all-time in free-throw percentage (91.2). He also scored an ACC-record 2,679 points.

Wright, the Big East Coach of the Year, led the Wildcats to a 28-5 record and their first conference regular-season title since 1997. Villanova shared the Big East crown with Connecticut.

Big deal for Sendek

Herb Sendek, 43, the coach at North Carolina State the past 10 seasons, received a lucrative deal to take over the Arizona State program, multiple sources have confirmed.

Sendek is believed to have agreed to a deal that will pay him in the range of about $1 million per season. That would mean he will be paid more than football coach Dirk Koetter, who makes about $780,000 currently, though he will be bumped up to about $1 million in one year.

Sendek was 191-132 at N.C. State.
