NW Hoops Roundup: Seattle U. men (6-2) down Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Seattle University handed perennial NCAA Division II powerhouse Cal State Bakersfield its first loss of the season, 94-83 on Saturday afternoon in men's basketball action.

Bernard Seals (game-high 28 points) and Sam Kirby (18) each hit six three-pointers in the game to lead the Redhawks (6-2) to the win at Radobank Arena, where the three-time D-II champion Roadrunners (4-1) have won more than 80 percent of their games.

Seals also had five assists and two steals. Jeffrey McDaniel connected on 7 of 9 shots for 16 points with seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and three steals. Leigh Swanson set career highs with 10 points and six rebounds.

Sean Namanny caught fire late in the game to score 10 points to make it five players in double digits for the Redhawks.

Randall Harding led CSUB with 19 points and five assists.

Seattle led for much of the first half despite Kirby going 0 for 6 from the field. With the score tied at 23 with 7:25 left in the first half, Seattle went on a 12-2 run and held a 40-33 halftime lead

The Redhawks opened the second half on a 10-0 run and never looked back.

Other men's basketball

Tony Binetti had 19 points to lead Seattle Pacific to a 93-65 rout of Missouri Southern in the first round of the High Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

• Five Whitworth players scored in double figures as the Pirates (4-2) rolled past UC Santa Cruz 84-54 in the first game of the Whitworth-St. Vincent de Paul Invitational in Burlingame, Calif. Whitworth will face California Lutheran, a 73-52 winner over Lewis & Clark, in today's final.

• Aaron Christensen scored a game-high 23 points to lead Simon Fraser (3-10) to a 71-59 victory over Evergreen State in Olympia. Doug Dietz led the Geoducks (5-6) with 19 points.

• Pacific Lutheran fell 84-75 to Concordia in Tacoma. Drew Cardwell had 24 points for the Lutes (0-7).

Women's basketball

Carli Grant and Jenny Poe combined for 39 points and Seattle Pacific bounced back from a rare losing streak to pound Westmont 95-66 in a in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Grant led the Falcons (5-2) with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Poe had 19.

Seattle Pacific, coming off consecutive losses for the first time in six years, overcame a slow start with 10 unanswered points, then took the lead for good with an 18-4 run late in the first period.
