The No. 24 Washington men's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of play yesterday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas.
Washington shot 5-over 293 and trails tournament-leading Arizona State by five strokes. South Carolina and UCLA are tied for second at 290 while top-ranked Oklahoma State is one shot ahead of the Huskies.
The tournament is considered the most elite event in collegiate golf this season outside of the NCAA championships.
Washington's quick start was led by junior James Lepp, who shot 1-under 71. He is in seventh place, trailing South Carolina's Mark Anderson and UCLA's Daniel Im by five strokes. UW's Alex Prugh shot even par and is in 10th place.
Other golf
• The Pacific Sound women won the Northwest Conference Spring Tournament at Fircrest Golf Club in Tacoma. UPS finished with a two-day total of 736. Pacific Lutheran was fourth at 758.
Track and field
The Washington track teams had a record eight individuals earn All-American status (top eight Americans in any event) on the first day of the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Huskies had four All-American performances in individual events, and the distance medley relay team also earned that recognition.
Freshman Norris Frederick finished sixth in the men's long jump (25-5 ¼). Freshman Amanda Miller was ninth in the women's 800 in school-record time (2:06.76), just missing the eight-person final. Senior Lindsey Egerdahl grabbed the last of 10 qualifying spots in today's women's mile final with a time of 4:46.44 and sophomore Ashley Lodree was 10th in the 60-meter women's hurdles (8.22).
The distance-relay team was fifth in 9:36.40. The team members were Austin Abbott, Sean Williams, Ryan Brown and Andy Fader.
• Danielle Ayers-Stamper broke her Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's long-jump record and finished in fourth place on the first day of the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Boston.
Ayers-Stamper smashed her record by more than three inches with a best of 19 feet, 5 ½ inches. The SPU distance medley relay finished seventh.
• Pacific Lutheran sophomore Megan Wochnick earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in the 20-pound throw at the NCAA Division III National Indoor Meet at Illinois Wesleyan University. She broke her school record with a mark of 53-5 ½.
Baseball
Senior Kaeo Rubin went 6 for 6 as Washington State defeated Northern Colorado 13-3 in its home opener. Rubin's six hits ties a school record set in 1907.
Starter Jimmy Freeman (5-0) earned the win for the Cougars (11-8), throwing six innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine. Craig Ayers (0-4) took the loss for the Bears (3-12), going only 1-2/3 innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits.
Softball
Seattle University (7-5, 2-0 GNAC) opened its Great Northwest Athletic Conference season with a pair of wins over Northwest Nazarene (2-14, 0-2 GNAC) at Logan Field. The Redhawks won the first game 7-3 and the second 3-0.
In the second game, Erin Martin (4-1) had a no-hitter through 5-2/3 innings and finished the game allowing two hits with 10 strikeouts.
Swimming
• Seattle University had two swimmers and two relays receive honorable mention All-American status on the third day of the NCAA Division II Championships in Orlando, Fla.
Freshmen Chris Coley finished 12th in the 200-yard men's butterfly (1:52.37) and Anna Vanha was 11th in the 200 women's butterfly (2:08.01).
Women's tennis
• The No. 12 Washington women lost 5-2 to No. 10 UCLA (7-4, 1-1 Pac-10) at Bill Quillian Stadium. The Huskies (10-3, 1-1) were led by Dea Sumantri, who posted her sixth straight win at No. 1 singles.
Men's tennis
• No. 14 Washington shut out visiting Idaho 7-0. UW improved to 11-3 and Idaho fell to 1-5.
Gymnastics
• Sophomore Chelsea Bakken won a share of the vault and tied for second on floor to lead Washington, but No. 1 Utah (10-2) won the meet 197.850 to 195.175 to remain perfect at home. The Huskies' (10-7) team total was their second-highest of the season.
