The Lookout Pass Ski Area in northern Idaho will be the first Northwest area to open to skiers and snowboarders.

Starting this weekend, Lookout Pass on the border of Idaho and Montana will begin operation from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

After being asked how it feels to open first, Jim Schreiber, marketing director for Lookout Pass, said, "It is always a pleasure and it is not unusual for us to be the first, but not this early in the season."

In the past 48 hours the mountain received 14 inches of snow with a base depth of 16 inches and a summit depth of 22 inches. Temperatures were hovering between 23 and 28 degrees.

Chair 1 and the rope tow will be open this weekend with at least 10 of 23 runs open. Lodge, concessions, rental shop and ski school will be in full operation. Lift tickets will cost $20, compared to normal daily rate of $24.

Lookout Pass is located on Interstate-90 about 73 miles from the Washington-Idaho border, and just east of Wallace, Idaho.

For more information call Lookout Pass at 208-744-1301, Ext. 3, or visit www.skilookout.com.

Many Northwest ski areas plan to open by Thanksgiving, but may open sooner with snowfall expected in the mountains this weekend.
