College Football
2003: 6-7 (4-4 in Pac-10). Coach: Karl Dorrell (second year, 6-7). What's to like: QB Drew Olson is a returning starter, WR Craig Bragg has two 50-plus receptions seasons, WR Tab Perry has regained eligibility, and RB Maurice Drew was good enough as a freshman to make 1,000-yard back Tyler Ebell transfer to UTEP. Offensive line returns virtually intact. Up in the air: Bruins have to rebuild entire DL, including replacing Pac-10 defensive player of the year Dave Ball. Secondary must replace early NFL entry Matt Ware. Impact newcomer: Justin Hickman, a JC transfer, should bolster defensive end. Key performer: DT Kevin Brown of Long Beach Poly, a true sophomore, is probably most athletic on a unit that needs breakthrough efforts. Stud student: TE Keith Carter, 3.25 GPA in sociology. Bottom line: UCLA carries lots of questions into 2004, including whether it should rate this highly. Key issue is whether the offensive chemistry will be there after a fractious first year under Dorrell.
