College Football
2003: 5-7 (2-6 in Pac-10). Coach: Dirk Koetter (fourth year, 17-20). What's to like: QB Andrew Walter is one of the nation's top returnees, G Grayling Love was a second-team all-league pick, and WR Derek Hagan had 66 catches. S Riccardo Stewart is one of the best around. Up in the air: Defense must rebound from 404-yard average yield in '03, especially 151 yards on the ground. Unit must acclimate to switch from 4-2-5 defense to 4-3. Impact newcomer: TE Zach Miller, a 6-4, 250-pound freshman, was named a starter three days into fall camp. Key performer: DE Kyle Caldwell was a touted freshman a year ago who could emerge to anchor Sun Devils up front. Stud student: Love, with a 3.46 GPA in finance, spent the summer as a loan officer in a bank. Bottom line: Sun Devils have annually been one of the toughest teams to figure, and Pac-10 media put them eighth. The guess here is they'll be better, although they play most of the Pac-10 heavyweights on the road.
