2003: 6-6 (4-4 in Pac-10).

Coach: Keith Gilbertson (second year, 6-6).

What's to like: Young RBs Kenny James and Shelton Sampson look like players, WR-KR Charles Frederick is a difference-maker, DE Manase Hopoi had 10-1/2 tackles for loss last year, and Derrick Johnson is one of top returning corners in Pac-10.

Up in the air: QB is still a guess, the OL allowed 35 sacks last year, and the DL will be very young at tackle.

Impact newcomer: S Dashon Goldson, a JC transfer, has been one of the most impressive Huskies.

Key performer:
LB Joe Lobendahn, whose potential the Huskies once prized, returns after missing most of 2003 with a knee injury.

Stud student: DE Ty Eriks has a 3.7 GPA in biology.

Bottom line: The Huskies are still making the transition to Gilbertson, but they aren't without talent. The emergence of a workable QB is vital, and the opening two games against Fresno State and UCLA at Husky Stadium probably will keynote season.
