Starbucks plans first store in Sweden, where Espresso House rules

Posted by Melissa Allison

Starbucks and business partner Scandinavian Service Partner (SSP) plan to open the coffee chain's first store in Sweden early next year, at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.

The news prompted Stockholm sketcher Nina Johansson to post this artist's view of Espresso House, a chain she says is "spreading like mushroom mycelium" there. (The international sketchers' site where she posted was founded by The Seattle Times' Gabriel Campanario.)

Since partnering in June 2008, Starbucks and SSP have opened stores in the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Germany. SSP also operates international locations for Burger King, Pizza Hut, Upper Crust and other fast-food companies.

Starbucks also recently opened at Utrecht Centraal Station in the Netherlands, with partner Servex, who will also run the company's Amsterdam Centraal Station location.
