Sonic Youth takes a swipe at Starbucks' old record label

Posted by

Starbucks is getting some blow-back over a record label it created in-house a couple years ago and subsequently pushed out of the house.

Little has been heard lately from the once-hyped Hear Music label, which signed big names including Paul McCartney, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell. Now, the joint venture with Starbucks has faded into marketing oblivion at Concord Music Group.

Sonic Youth isn't letting the label rest, according to a round-up of band members' comments by BeatCrave.

Guitarist Lee Ronaldo referred to Starbucks unkindly in a recent interview with The Quietus and said that when the band put together the album "Hits Are For Squares" with Starbucks, “we thought it was going to be the biggest sell-out of our career."

In fact, the relatively few albums that were made did sell out and fans didn't clamor for more.

“It’s probably our rarest record,” band member Kim Gordon told Spinner. “It’s impossible to find anywhere.”

Actually, a copy is available on eBay at the moment, current bid $30.

A Starbucks spokeswoman confirmed that "the CD was available in Starbucks stores in early 2008 and sold out very quickly. It was a limited release and available exclusively at select Starbucks locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C."
