At the Singapore Air Show on Wednesday, Boeing announced an agreement with Singapore Airlines Cargo to take over technical management of the carrier's fleet of 13 Boeing 747-400 freighter jets.
The cargo airline is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines. One of the world's largest carriers, Singapore has its own in-house maintenance and repair organization, which will continue to do the hands-on maintenance of all its aircraft.
The new agreement makes Boeing responsible for planning and managing the maintenance: monitoring the aircraft every day, checking on reliability and adjusting the maintenance schedule as required to optimize performance. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The deal is with a unit of Boeing called Commercial Aviation Services (CAS), which provides complete aftermarket support to airlines in the form of spare parts, flight-crew training and scheduling, navigation charts, electronic data monitoring and aircraft maintenance support.
CAS accounts for 15 percent of the revenue of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Last year, that was about $5.4 billion.
"The aftermarket is really big," said Lou Mancini, CAS senior vice president. "It's a great opportunity for Boeing."
