New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte has asked President Barack Obama to drop a requirement that union labor be considered to build a Job Corps center in Manchester.
The state's congressional delegation said last August the U.S. Labor Department planned to move forward with the center, which will offer education and vocational training to students ages 16 to 24. A dispute over using union labor delayed the project in 2009; only a small percentage of New Hampshire's construction workers are unionized.
Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said last year the department was planning a Project Labor Agreement for the center, which traditionally have called for a collective bargaining agreement with workers.
Ayotte said PLAs needlessly increase construction costs and limit the ability of non-union companies to compete for government construction projects.
