GREEN BAY, Wis. —

The former president and CEO of trucking giant Schneider National died Friday in hospice care at age 76.

The company says Donald Schneider had long battled Alzheimer's disease. Schneider began working for his father's company while he was in high school in the early 1950s. He drove truck to pay for his education at St. Norbert College in De Pere. He earned a master's degree in business from the University of Pennsylvania.

He returned to the Green Bay area and became president of Schneider National in 1976. Under his leadership, the company became the first in the industry to adopt a satellite-based communications and positioning system for its trucks. He founded Schneider Logistics and Schneider Communications.

Schneider is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pat, and 5 children.
