AvalonBay Communities, one of the country's biggest apartment developers, has broken ground on a 265-unit complex in Ballard on the site of the old Sunset Bowl.

The six-story project, on Northwest Market Street at 14th Avenue Northwest, includes underground parking and 12,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

The bowling alley that occupied the property for more than half a century was closed in 2008 and demolished last year.

The Ballard project is AvalonBay's 14th in Washington. The company is finishing a 204-unit complex in Lower Queen Anne, and plans to start building a 385-unit complex in the University District next year.
