With the space shuttle program winding down, Boeing issued layoff notices Friday to about 510 employees, including 100 in Huntington Beach, Calif., the Los Angeles Times reported.

About 260 employees in Houston and 150 at Cape Canaveral also received 60-day advance layoff warnings. Some workers were moved to other space programs, the company said.

Boeing was responsible for engineering and project management for hardware modifications on the shuttle fleet following its 1997 acquisition of Rockwell International, which in 1976 completed the first space shuttle orbiter, Enterprise.
