Walmart v. Wilderness hearing enters Day 2

A trial that could decide the fate of a Walmart store near a Virginia Civil War battlefield is getting pushed back while a judge hears a raft of motions.

ORANGE, Va. —

A trial that could decide the fate of a Walmart store near a Virginia Civil War battlefield is getting pushed back while a judge hears a raft of motions.

Circuit Court Judge Daniel Bouton heard some of the pretrial issues Tuesday and set aside time Wednesday to hear more. The trial could begin on Thursday.

Walmart won Orange County's approval to build near the Wilderness Battlefield, but residents and preservationists are fighting to overturn the 2009 decision. They contend the store will bring traffic and more commerce to the area.

Tuesday, an attorney for the county said the case is not about the Civil War, but local land use.
