Who's built what in South Lake Union

It's been a big year for South Lake Union, Seattle's fastest-changing neighborhood.

Amazon.com moved into the first buildings in its 1.7-million-square-foot headquarters complex. City contractors at last broke ground on a makeover of the traffic bottleneck that generations of frustrated motorists know as the Mercer Mess.

On Saturday, city officials, the Seattle Parks Foundation and others celebrated the grand opening of Lake Union Park, 12 acres of green along a once-inaccessible shoreline.

This big year caps a decade of change in South Lake Union. Research labs, condos and office towers have replaced warehouses, commercial laundries and auto dealerships. Still more projects are planned.

Much of this is the doing of Paul Allen's Vulcan Real Estate, the neighborhood's largest landowner. Vulcan's investments have lured others.
