Institute for Systems Biology moving to South Lake Union

The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is moving its headquarters and labs to South Lake Union.

The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is moving its headquarters and labs to South Lake Union.

The private, nonprofit research lab has leased a 140,000-square-foot Vulcan Real Estate building on Terry Avenue North that once housed Merck's Rosetta research operations.

More than 300 ISB employees will start moving in next spring.

ISB, now based in Fremont and Wallingford, was co-founded 10 years ago by biotech pioneer Leroy Hood. The new lease is for more than twice as much space as the lab occupies now, Vulcan and ISB said.

ISB's move is one more step in South Lake Union's evolution as a life sciences and biotech hub. Firms already operating in the fast-changing neighborhood include UW Medicine, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, PATH and Novo Nordisk.
