Real-estate investment trust Avalon Bay Communities broke ground Monday on a new apartment complex on the site of the old Mountaineers Club building in Seattle's Lower Queen Anne neighborhood.

The 204-unit project, at Third Avenue West and West Thomas Street, is called Avalon Queen Anne. The developer said it plans to start leasing in fall 2011, when it expects demand will have picked up.

Avalon Bay, based in Alexandria, Va., owns or has an interest in 172 apartment complexes around the country, including 14 in Washington.
