Construction jobs in state fall 18.4% in past year
Construction employment in Washington has dropped 18.4 percent over the past year, the fourth-worst decline in the nation behind Nevada, Colorado and Arizona.
Construction employment in Washington has dropped 18.4 percent over the past year, the fourth-worst decline in the nation, according to a report released Friday by the Associated General Contractors of America.
The only states that experienced steeper drops between March 2009 and March 2010, the report says, was Nevada (30 percent decline), Colorado (20.3 percent) and Arizona (19.9 percent).
The association based its numbers on an analysis of federal employment statistics. It said Washington lost 31,2000 construction jobs during the past 12 months, with employment falling from 169,800 to 138,600.
Association officials said employment nationally is likely to continue dropping this year, despite federal stimulus-funded work, because of continued declines in construction financed by the private sector and state and local governments.
