Boeing's Dreamliner No. 2 flying to California for flight tests

Boeing's Dreamliner No. 2, the second 787 flight test airplane, is scheduled to fly from Boeing Field to Victorville, Calif., early Tuesday.

Victorville, a closed military base with a 15,000-foot runway on the edge of the desert northeast of Los Angeles, has been chosen for various flight tests of the 787 and also the 747-8.

The air space around the base offers unrestricted flying, and in the event of an emergency it is surrounded by dry lakebeds where a plane could safely touch down.

About 200 Boeing flight test personnel are expected to be based there over the months ahead, with one or two more Dreamliners also flying in for specific flight tests.
