Fourth and final Dreamlifter enters service

Boeing's fourth and final Dreamlifter plane, used to transport large sections of the 787 Dreamliner around the globe, entered service Tuesday with a flight from Everett to Wichita, Kan.

Boeing's fourth and final Dreamlifter transport plane entered service Tuesday with a flight from Everett to Wichita, Kan.

The Dreamlifters are used to transport large sections of the 787 Dreamliner around the globe.

The ungainly but impressively massive planes are custom-modified used-747s. The regular upper fuselage has been peeled off and replaced by a bulbous top to accommodate the 787 wings and fuselage sections that it flies between suppliers in Japan, Italy, South Carolina and Kansas, and eventually to the final assembly site in Everett.

The modification work was done for Boeing in Taiwan by Evergreen Aviation Technologies.
