Harbor Properties of Seattle has bought 1.2 acres in the resurgent Columbia City neighborhood, and says it plans to build about 120 apartments there, perhaps breaking ground as soon as early next year.
The property, just west of Rainier Avenue South, fronts South Hudson Street and 37th Avenue South. It is part of the former site of the St. Gobain plastics factory, and includes a 1920s-vintage one-time auto showroom that Harbor says it will preserve for commercial use.
The site, for which Harbor paid $3.45 million, is about four blocks from Sound Transit's Columbia City light-rail station. That was a major factor in Harbor's decision to invest, President Denny Onslow said.
Harbor once had plans to build up to 400 apartments on the entire 4-acre St. Gobain property, but backed off when the economy tanked. "We decided that if we wanted to get one good, bite-sized chunk going, this was it," Onslow said.
