Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell is resigning, the company announced today. He will be replaced by Peter Klein, who has been the CFO of the company's Business division.

Liddell, 51, will remain in his position until the end of the year to help manage the transition. After coming to the company in May 2005, he oversaw a period during which Microsoft — in response to falling sales in a deteriorating economy — made some deep cuts in expenses, including its first sizable layoffs.

"Chris and his finance team have accomplished a great deal over the past four and a half years," Chief Exeuctive Steve Ballmer said in a statement. "The team is deep and strong, and has an excellent record of building value for our shareholders."
