How the major stock indexes fared on Wednesday

A late-day slump left stocks mixed Wednesday as investors couldn't hold on to their optimism after the Federal Reserve gave an encouraging assessment of the economy. A House vote to speed up the effective date of limits on credit card companies took bank stocks sharply lower in the last hour of trading.

A late-day slump left stocks mixed Wednesday as investors couldn't hold on to their optimism after the Federal Reserve gave an encouraging assessment of the economy. A House vote to speed up the effective date of limits on credit card companies took bank stocks sharply lower in the last hour of trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 30.23, or 0.3 percent, to 9,802.14.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.09, or 0.1 percent, to 1,046.50.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 1.80, or 0.1 percent, to 2,055.52.

For the week:

The Dow is up 89.41 or 0.9 percent

The S&P is up 10.31 or 1 percent

The Nasdaq is up 10.41 or 0.5 percent

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,025.75, or 11.7 percent.

The S&P is up 143.25, or 15.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 478.49, or 30.3 percent.
