Ill. gov says he supports campaign finance bill
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he supports a compromise on how to cap political contributions.
The Associated Press
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he supports a compromise on how to cap political contributions.
The Democratic governor says he looks forward to signing the measure, which he calls an "excellent" bill.
It would create the state's first limits on the size of campaign donations. For instance, individuals could give up to $5,000.
But the bill contains an exception. Political parties and legislative leaders would be able to donate unlimited amounts for a general election.
Republicans oppose that exception. They say it will make a few political insiders more powerful than ever.
Lawmakers approved the donation limits Friday.
