Gannett CEO returns after back surgery
The CEO of Gannett Co., the country's largest newspaper publisher, returned to work Thursday after a medical leave this summer for back surgery.

The CEO of Gannett Co., the country's largest newspaper publisher, returned to work Thursday after a medical leave this summer for back surgery.
"I am glad to be back and returning to the day-to-day responsibilities at Gannett," Craig Dubow, 54, said in a statement. "I feel very good about my personal health and the company's."
Gannett, which publishes USA Today and dozens of other newspapers, announced in June that Dubow would be taking a medical leave after "major" back surgery. Gracia C. Martore, executive vice president and chief financial officer, took over his duties.
The company faces historic challenges. Advertisers have pulled back during the recession and more are turning away from print to buy cheaper ads online. At the same time, many readers are migrating to free news sites like the ones run by Gannett newspapers and dropping their print subscriptions.
Gannett has responded with deep cost cutting to stay profitable. It surprised investors last month by announcing it expects third-quarter earnings to far exceed Wall Street expectations despite falling revenue.
