Head of Boston Globe union under fire on finances

The executive board of The Boston Globe's largest union says union president Daniel Totten appears to have violated its financial rules.

The Associated Press

BOSTON —

The executive board of The Boston Globe's largest union says union president Daniel Totten appears to have violated its financial rules.

In a letter sent Thursday to Boston Newspaper Guild membership, the board said it had canceled Totten's union credit card and suspended his check-signing authority. It also said a "comprehensive external audit" of union finances had been ordered.

The letter said specific charges were being drafted, but did not elaborate.

Reached by The Associated Press, Totten said it was an "internal matter" and declined further comment.

Following a threat by the Globe's parent company, The New York Times Co., to close the newspaper, the Guild approved a contract in July that called for an 8.3 percent wage cut and other measures to save the newspaper $10 million a year.
