EgyptAir orders 737s, drops order for 777s

Boeing Co. and EgyptAir announced Thursday that the airline has ordered eight more 737-800 planes, dropping a previous order for two 777s.
EgyptAir has seven 737-800s in operation and is taking delivery of an additional five 737-800s this year. And it has five 777s in its fleet and is scheduled to receive six 777-300ERs beginning next year.
EgyptAir Chairman Capt. Tawfik Assy said the airline is pursuing a fleet plan that will allow it to expand its regional markets and offer passengers "extensive international routing options."
The 737 performs well in maintaining scheduled flights to and from Cairo, and the 777 is "unmatched in efficiency" on long flights to EgyptAir's international destinations, he said.
Boeing shares rose $1.31, or nearly 3 percent, to $45.34 in afternoon trading.
