Boeing handing out 668 layoff notices companywide today; about 100 locally

Boeing has been issuing layoff notices monthly since January, when Chief Executive Jim McNerney said the company needed to cut 10,000 positions in 2009.

Boeing plans to give layoff notices to 668 workers companywide today, with about 100 of those in the Puget Sound region.

Only about 80 of the workers receiving the notices work in the Commercial Airplanes division, Boeing said.

Most of the others work for the defense division. Defense unit chief Jim Albaugh said this week that his division must shed 1,000 positions because of Pentagon budget cuts.

Boeing has been issuing layoff notices monthly since January, when Chief Executive Jim McNerney said the company needed to cut 10,000 positions in 2009.

Since the beginning of the year, Boeing employment in Washington state is down nearly 2,700 positions and now stands at 73,758.
