Smith & Hawken garden stores at University Village in Seattle and on Northup Way in Bellevue will close by the end of this year.

Parent company Scotts Miracle-Gro, of Marysville, Ohio, said it will shutter all 56 Smith & Hawken stores in 22 states after efforts to sell the struggling chain stalled. Going-out-of business sales began today.

"The combination of a weak economy and the lack of scale proved too great to overcome," Scotts Chief Executive Jim Hagedorn said in a statement. "By eliminating the losses from Smith & Hawken, we can invest even further in driving profitable growth."

Scotts said it will have after-tax charges of $25 million stemming from lease terminations and severance payments.
