The business week ahead

Heads up: It's a holiday-shortened week with U.S. financial markets closed Friday in observance of Independence Day. Economic reports out this week include the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index of home prices for April and the Conference Board's consumer-confidence index for June, both Tuesday. On Wednesday, the U.S. unemployment rate for June is released. For April, it hit 9.4 percent, the same as the jobless rate for Washington state, the state's highest in more than 25 years). Also out Wednesday is the Institute of Supply Management's monthly manufacturing index, plus vehicle sales. The latest report on factory orders is out Thursday.

Tuesday: The end of the second quarter. Will the bipolar stock market finish the quarter ahead or even further behind?

Wednesday: Look for a full roundup of the stock market's second-quarter results, with emphasis on Northwest stocks, in The Seattle Times' Business section.
