Battery manufacturer Exide Technologies is closing its Sumner distribution center and laying off 43 employees, according to a notice filed with the state.

The company, which opened the distribution center in 1984, said affected employees will lose their jobs between now and mid-May, and their work absorbed by other Exide locations. A sales branch at the site will move, Exide said in a statement.

Exide, based in Alpharetta, Ga., describes itself as one of the world's largest manufacturers of lead acid batteries used in transportation and industry.
