Federal economic stimulus bill provides $485K for senior nutrition programs

U.S. Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii are announcing that the state will receive $485,000 from the federal economic stimulus bill for senior nutrition assistance programs.

HONOLULU —

U.S. Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii are announcing that the state will receive $485,000 from the federal economic stimulus bill for senior nutrition assistance programs.

About $160,000 of the money will help finance senior meals programs. The remainder will help senior assistance organizations weather the current economic recession, which has sapped charitable donations in a time of rising need and a growing elderly population.

With the funds, the programs can restore nutrition services and worker positions that have been cut back or eliminated.

Distribution of the money is based on a population-driven formula that in part takes into account the number of people over the age of 60 in each state.
