Minn. agriculture commissioner says raising ethanol cap could create jobs, help energy goals

Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson says raising the national cap on the amount of ethanol that can be mixed with gasoline would create thousands of jobs in Minnesota and help the state reach its own goals for ethanol use.

ST. PAUL, Minn. —

Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson says raising the national cap on the amount of ethanol that can be mixed with gasoline would create thousands of jobs in Minnesota and help the state reach its own goals for ethanol use.

Hugoson appeared a news conference Wednesday where an ethanol trade association released a report showing more than 3,000 new jobs would come to the state if the Environmental Protection Agency allows for a 15 percent ethanol blend for gasoline.

Earlier this month, Growth Energy asked the EPA for a waiver allowing the higher percentage of ethanol. Currently only 10 percent ethanol blends are allowed for conventional vehicles, while an 85 percent ethanol blend has been approved for flexible fuel vehicles.
