Shinnston receives $866,000 to update sewage plant, prevent overflows into West Fork River

The town of Shinnston has received an $866,000 federal grant to help finance upgrades that should prevent sewage overflows into the West Fork River.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. —

The town of Shinnston has received an $866,000 federal grant to help finance upgrades that should prevent sewage overflows into the West Fork River.

The town plans to spend $4.5 million to upgrade its collection and treatment system.

Separating sewage collection pipes from the town's stormwater system is expected to reduce the amount of sewage overflows into the river during periods of heavy rain.

The project also will reduce the amount of water Shinnston's treatment plant must process.

The $866,000 grant was announced Wednesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region III office.

Grants and loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will cover the remaining costs.
