The Star Tribune says its pressmen have ratified a contract that includes layoffs and pay cuts in an effort to keep the newspaper afloat.

The Star Tribune says its pressmen have ratified a contract that includes layoffs and pay cuts in an effort to keep the newspaper afloat.

The newspaper said the contract was approved Tuesday night by a vote of 72-5 and will save the company about $3.5 million a year.

It says terms include wage reductions, 24 layoffs and reduced manning requirements on the newspaper's presses.

The contract for the 116 pressmen is the second approved this week. The newspaper's mailers approved a new contract Sunday.

The company will seek deals with its delivery truck drivers and newsroom employees.

The company wants to cut union labor costs by $20 million a year.

The Star Tribune filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 15.
