Mississippi firm partners with AT&T in 'smart grid technology'

A Mississippi firm is working with AT&T Inc. to provide utility companies with wireless technology they can use to monitor meters.

JACKSON, Miss. —

A Mississippi firm is working with AT&T Inc. to provide utility companies with wireless technology they can use to monitor meters.

SmartSynch, based in Jackson, says its program allows utilities to check the meters from a computer rather than sending someone to the site.

The partnership with AT&T allows the company to market its product on a wider scale, and allows the utilities to communicate directly with meters over the AT&T wireless network.

Stephen D. Johnston, chief executive officer of SmartSynch, said the utility companies are expected to spend up to $50 billion on "smart grid technology" and the stimulus bill includes $11 billion.
