Hearst says announcement on P-I to come next week

The Hearst Corp. plans no announcement about the future of its Seattle Post-Intelligencer until next week.

Seatttle Times business staff

The Hearst Corp. won't announce a decision about the future of its Seattle Post-Intelligencer until next week, the P-I's publisher said in an e-mail today.

New York-based Hearst announced Jan. 9 that it would close the money-losing P-I, at least in print, unless a buyer emerged in 60 days. That deadline has now passed.

Hearst has indicated none of the P-I's 167 employees would be laid off until March 18 at the earliest, but the company could conceivably close the paper earlier than that.

Hearst also has said the P-I could survive in some form online with a much smaller newsroom, and last week began offering provisional jobs with such a venture to some staffers.
