In the Seattle metro area, grocery prices rose 1.7 percent in July and stood 7.9 percent higher than in July 2007, according to partial figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Rents in the metro area were up 0.7 percent last month and 8.2 percent over the past year, while owners' equivalent rent — an indirect measure of home prices — rose 0.5 percent, for a 6.7 percent annualized increase.

Gasoline, however, fell 0.4 percent in July, reflecting the retreat in crude-oil prices. Still, gas cost 43.7 percent more in the Seattle area than it did a year earlier.

The BLS tracks local prices for groceries, shelter and energy monthly, but only publishes a complete Seattle-area inflation index every other month, which it did last month.
