Washington Mutual said today it has replaced James Corcoran, president of its vast retail branch network.
Stephen Rotella, WaMu's president and CEO, will assume Corcoran's duties until a permanent successor is named.
The struggling thrift has touted the strength of its retail banking franchise in the past year while it shuttered hundreds of stand-alone mortgage lending offices.
Corcoran oversaw WaMu's 15-state system of 2,257 branches, as well as small business banking, and consumer lending
The company's brief regulatory filing gave no explanation for the departure of Corcoran, who joined WaMu in May 2006 and was a member of the company's executive committee.
