Heads up: A holiday-shortened week may be just what the Wall Street doctor ordered. Plus the first day in July has been an up day for the Dow in 16 of the past 19 years, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. Among the monthly economic reports due out this week are the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index on Tuesday, factory orders Wednesday and on Thursday, the U.S. unemployment rate and the ISM index for the service sector.

Tuesday: Watch for The Seattle Times roundup of stocks' second-quarter performance, with complete stats for Northwest stocks, in the Business section. ... A six-year contract covering West Coast dockworkers expires, but the International Longshore and Warehouse Union doesn't have plans for a strike, and both sides have signaled their willingness to keep talking after the deadline.

Thursday: The trading day is shortened for U.S. stock markets ahead of the holiday, closing at 10 a.m. Seattle time.

Friday: U.S. financial markets are closed for the Independence Day holiday
